 Gökova
Mayor, Durmuş Ali Sazaklı |
A SINCERE WELCOME FROM THE TOWN OF GÖKOVA.........
where the Gulf of Gökova and the roads of tourism
intersect. Gökova Gulf…. known all around the world for its natural beauty
is a 20,000 decare fertilized plain with natural spring water and fresh air
which makes Gökova town a healthy and pleasant place to live. We feel
honoured to present this website to you hoping to reveal our mystical
history and fascinating natural richness to new generations and increase the
tourism potential of our charming town.
Abidin Dino has drawn a
picture of happiness.
However…….!!!
Had he seen Gökova
town he would have realised that the area as a whole is something to be enjoyed. |
Gökova Saturday market is very popular and the biggest in the local area - probably 5 times the size
of Akyaka market with everything from fruit, vegetables, cheese stalls, many
clothing stalls, tools, electrical goods etc etc. The market has recently been upgraded with a full covered roof over the produce area.
Wherever we can we will gıve you the phonetic pronunciation for the place names as they can be difficult for non-Turkish speakers. Gökova for example is pronounced Ger-koh-vah, not Gok- over.

Restored Ottoman gates on a town house |
Gökova
town had been a farming community for a very long time. Gökova is the principle town in this area. Gökova Gulf
is named after our
town which stands at the eastern end of the gulf. In ancient times, this was
the site of the city of Idyma and the remains of the acropolis still stand on
our hilltops overlooking our town together with the ancient necropolis of Carian tombs dating back to the 4th century BC.
There are many old buildings in the town and a hidden wealth of local
industry. We hope to present some of them to you here in our website.
